Sets bright purple, highly aromatic flowers which look beautiful grown in gardens, fields, yards, or just on a windowsill. Fresh or dried flowers together with pungent, intense flavored leaves go well in flavoring lamb, game meat makes a soothing cup of tea. Dried flowers keep away parasites, especially moss. Grows best in slightly calcareous soil, in a bright, warm location. Can grow in the same place for 10 years or more. Lavender is known for its calming and soothing properties, benefiting the nervous system, relaxing the mind and body, and supporting over all well being.

HOW TO GROW

Growing: In a tropical climate, the best time to start is winter, as the sun is more intense in summer and afterward it rains, which increases the humidity level and makes it intolerable for the plant to thrive. That is why winter is the best month to plant lavender in the tropics. Use shallow seed trays and just barely cover the seeds with soil. Use light soil or a vermiculite blend. Keep the seeds moist but not overly wet. A sunny spot is a great location to keep the soil from getting too wet and to add warmth. Your lavender seedlings will be ready to transplant once they have several leaves per plant. Your first year of growth will not be impressive, but by year two, expect to have large, blooming lavender. Moderate watering. In temperate climates start the seeds indoors in Mar/Apr and transplant outdoors when the danger of the last frost is gone.
